This species grows up to 1m high on rocky hills or Spinifex-dominated plains. It produces mauve-pink flower spikes after rains and can die right back during drought, then regrow after rains. Many examples of Horse Mulla Mulla
can also be seen on the Overlander walk on the south east side of the garden. Widespread but not very common across a fairly large area of inland Australia.
