About Us
Olive Pink Botanic Garden (OPBG) is a unique, not-for-profit arid zone botanic garden located on Arrernte Country in Mparntwe/Alice Springs. Founded in 1956 by anthropologist and activist Olive Muriel Pink, the Garden is home to over 600 Central Australian plant species and plays a crucial role in conservation, education, and community well-being.
OPBG is both a natural sanctuary and a cultural space, offering visitors a peaceful environment in which to connect with the desert landscape, learn about native flora, and reflect on the profound Aboriginal significance of the site.

About the Role
Olive Pink Botanic Garden is seeking a motivated and community-minded individual to join our team as a Horticultural Apprentice.
This is an exciting opportunity to gain hands-on experience in one of Central Australia’s most iconic natural environments, while working toward a nationally recognised horticultural trade qualification.
No prior experience is required – just a strong desire to learn and build a career in horticulture.
Key Responsibilities
· Assist with the care and maintenance of native plant collections
· Learn and apply horticultural techniques such as planting, propagation, pruning, pest control, and irrigation
· Operate hand tools and small machinery (training provided)
· Maintain a clean, safe, and organised work environment
· Collaborate with a diverse team, including staff, volunteers, and correctional workers
· Participate in Garden events and community activities as needed
· Undertake a Certificate II leading to a Certificate III in Horticulture
Essential Criteria
• A keen interest in the natural environment, horticulture, and outdoor work
• Strong motivation to complete a horticultural apprenticeship and gain a trade qualification
• Capacity to work independently and safely
• Good written and verbal communication skills
• Ability to work respectfully with people from diverse backgrounds
• Willingness to learn and take direction
• Willingness and ability to travel to Darwin for some aspects of training
Desirable
• Basic knowledge of desert plants or the local environment (not essential)
