Sacred Sites

Alice Springs Sacred Sites management program

Our Vision is to assist in establishing a sacred sites management program for Alice Springs facilitated by the Olive Pink Botanic Garden working with Traditional Owners, the Aboriginal Areas Protection Authority, Civiltrain and Jobfind. We are initially working with groups of aboriginal trainees to actively manage sacred sites within the central Arrernte boundaries (Alice Springs municipality) with the duel objectives of maintaining the Sites and developing ongoing employment opportunities. After extensive consultation with Custodians we have been given an Authority certificate by the Aboriginal Areas Protection Authority (AAPA) for works to be conducted on over one hundred sites around Alice springs.

Stride For Health 2012

The Stride for Health is an annual event held to raise awareness and to highlight the work of the two Alice Springs cancer support groups: Bosom Buddies breast cancer support group, and Alice Springs Prostate Cancer Support Group.

To be diagnosed with cancer today means that, particularly if the cancer is detected early, there is a much greater chance of long-term survival, and of cure. This is the key message our groups have in common, as we encourage people to be proactive in managing their health and wellbeing.

The Stride for Health is an important part of getting our messages across to the community. It is a family fun event (non competitive) of 4 km, open to all ages, and is followed by a light breakfast, and a barrel draw of prizes donated by supportive local business.

As well as raising awareness and focusing on the peer support and information offered by our groups to people and their families in our community touched by cancer each year, we also promote the importance of an active and healthy lifestyle during treatment and in recovery.

Being able to be proactive in regaining your health and wellbeing is very empowering, as it something you can do for yourself, and is not dependent on medical treatment.
The evidence is strong that participating in exercise programs plays a big part in reducing recurrence of disease shown especially in bowel and breast cancer studies)

Both Bosom Buddies and the alice Springs Prostate support groups are composed of survivors of breast and prostate cancer, and operate in a voluntary manner without any government funding support. Each group meets monthly and aims especially to support those who are newly diagnosed, providing encouragement, hope and information to the people and their families.

Bosom Buddies was established in 2001 after a couple of us were diagnosed through BreastScreen here in Alice. The Men’s Group got going in 2008. The Stride for Health began in 2007. Initially held in October (breast cancer awareness month), now that the Prostate Group is involved we do it on the cusp of the 2 awareness months.

Human Rights Arts and Film Festival

Pop Cinema Presents – HRAFF 2012 – Olive Pink Botanic Gardens

June 8th, 9th  and 10th

Art is indeed a luminous language. It is a powerful means of communication, transcending cultural, ethnic and linguistic differences. It is this power that HRAFF 2012 seeks to harness.

In its fifth year, HRAFF continues to provide a shared site whereby artists, human rights organisations and the Australian public are united in their desire to contribute to social change. For eleven days in Melbourne, and then three weeks across the country, HRAFF will exhibit a selection of contemporary cinema, fine art, discussion panels and music, seeking to engage, inspire and entertain.

The Festival aims to advance and encourage education and debate among the broader community, to showcase and support Australian and international artists and to promote works about Australians. The Festival is committed to encouraging and facilitating the participation of new audiences: our community outreach program targets marginalised communities; screenings in workplaces showcase the benefits of developing a human rights culture; and our education program travels Victoria engaging the next generation in the pertinent issues of human rights and global awareness through the very powerful medium of film. Recognising that human rights issues can be overwhelming, HRAFF aims not only to raise awareness, but also to redirect the debate towards a more positive and productive outcome. The message we hope to transmit is one focused on change, inspiration, passion, creativity, inclusion, and most of all, possibility.

Tangentyere Artists – Exhibition Opening

Tangentyere Artists – Exhibition Opening – Friday 8th June 2012

Tangentyere Artistsis a vibrant and dynamic art centre belonging to the town camp residents of Alice Springs. The studio work space is open and welcoming, providing artists a place of respite from the intensity of some Town Camps, a contemplative place to work and create and elevate.

Tangentyere Council is the major service delivery agency for 18 housing associations known as town camp communities in Alice Springs. The camps are home to around 2000 Indigenous people from the local area and their many visitors from remote communities across Central Australia. The council is Aboriginal owned and controlled and governed by an executive of elected town camp residents. Town Camp residents are some of the most disadvantaged people in Australia, living in the most challenging physical and social conditions.

As we are part of the Aboriginal owned and governed Tangentyere Councils’ Social Services division, for many of the Artists the Art Centre serves as respite and therapy from the daily grind, the alcohol, and the suicide epidemic of their young and other trouble in their lives. Tangentyere Artists are increasingly becoming known for the figurative paintings with textual references; reflections of everyday life in the Alice Springs Town Camps.

Through the creation of recycled metal jewellery and painted found objects, seed jewellery, painted wooden panels and acrylic on canvas, artists create classical as well as quirky and offbeat art objects.

Tangentyere Artists strives to develop community partnerships and new opportunities for artists, finding ways of communicating to broad audiences the experience and perspectives of the town camp artists. The art service empowers individual town camp residents beyond the everyday so they are able to achieve collectively what they could not do individually.

The art centre provides a platform from which artists can express themselves, their lives and cultural values, while enriching their community well being and family livelihoods.

We have a pretty busy exhibition and events schedule, but also run art therapy and well being projects, from suicide prevention work, introduction to yoga and meditation, and healthy eating.

If you are in Alice Springs, Australia, we invite you to drop in and see us, so we can show you in person what we do and aim to achieve.
